Family Planning

~Choosing when and why to get pregnant, for the best health and well being of mother, father, child and family.

Planning first to have children in the future prepares parents to better provide children with a nurturing home and supportive family life where families can thrive.

Sexual and Reproductive Health

~Physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being in the areas of life concerned with sexuality and having children.

~Includes our feelings and desires, sexual relationships, marriage, having children, protecting ourselves from infection and making choices about our sexual and reproductive lives.

Free or Low Cost Clinical Family Planning Services

Hawai`i Department of Health and local health care providers offer confidential family planning services to adults and teens age 14 and older, regardless of insurance. Some of the services offered include pregnancy testing, physical exams, STD screening, counseling, birth control supplies, emergency contraception, referrals and education. (Link to EC page)

FREE Educational Services

A trained health educator is available to:

  • Attend health fairs and conferences with educational displays and information tailored to the event

  • Lead engaging activities for young people, ages 9 and older – in classrooms, clubs or informal groups - bringing a pro-abstinence message and empowering healthy choices

  • Give informative presentations regarding reproductive health as appropriate for adults, youth and community service providers

  • Disseminate educational materials and information through direct contacts and media contacts

  • Provide in-service education on accessing family planning clinical services and updates on reproductive health, current birth control methods and referrals.

Educational Presentations

Sensitive issues are effectively addressed by an experienced family planning educator, trained by Hawaii Department of Health, Family Planning Program. Participants learn about choices and resources to postpone sexual involvement, and prevent unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection. Discussion topics for children support the Department of Education’s Health Education Curriculum and are presented in age-appropriate levels of understanding, according to teachers’ requests.

  • Ovulation, pregnancy & the fertility cycle

  • Dating, safety and appropriate behavior

  • Postponing sexual involvement

  • Risks, responsibilities and consequences of sexual involvement

  • Planning your reproductive future; family planning to realize future goals and dreams

  • Abstinence and birth control choices

  • Caring for men’s and women’s special health needs; accessing local reproductive health services for teens and adults

  • Complimentary Parent Education facilitates parent’s role as their child’s most important source of values, beliefs and knowledge. Addresses parents’ comfort, knowledge, and skills to empower children to postpone premature sexual involvement.

Sample parental consent and topic forms:

  • Puberty education, grades 5 and 6

  • Intermediate grades 7-8, with pre- and post-tests

  • High school, grades 9-12, with pre- and post-tests
